figma feature redesign
Figma is an increasingly popular tool for designers. I have used Figma for the last 2+ years, and have used it for a variety of tasks — prototyping, creating free-form letters to friends, drafting graphics, you name it. Figma is typically my go-to for anything fast and creative because it is so easy to use.
Since I am usually designing for a particular platform, whether it be Twitter, print (A4), or desktop, I usually go into Frame to choose the dimensions I need to work in. This requires up to 3 more clicks than necessary.
Problem: It requires too many steps for the user to choose an initial frame.
Solution: Upon creation of a new file, users can choose their starting frame dimensions.
Ideally, I would want to observe how frequently users utilize the Frame option to validate my problem. Then, I would want to test if users knew how to access Frame and create a Frame. Ultimately, I want to better understand other Figma users’ behaviors on the platform because I may have a biased point of view.
Assuming that this problem is valid, I moved forward with creating a sample wireframe of what this redesigned Frame feature would look like.*
Next steps: Conduct preliminary user research to see if this is a common issue that many users face. After validating the problem (or not), proceed with iterating the problem statement. Then, prototype.
* Changes to wireframe if time permitted: I would change the color scheme to more appropriately match Figma’s branding. I would also have the dimensions of the frames be reflected in the gray boxes, ie. 1080x1080 would show a gray square, whereas 1080x540 would show a rectangle.
